Six Steps to becoming a Top Rum Taster

(As taken from the Select Vat release booklet)

1. Engage in Reconnaissance

Before commencing, you must learn the facts of the rum. Learn of its strength, its age, and how it was made.

2. Choose Your Tasting Vessel

A broad brandy glass short in stature is a fine choice for this mission, but most wine glasses will also be adequate.

3. Check the Clarity of the Rum

Raise the rum in its tasting vessel up to the light. How is the visibility? The colour of the rum may be clear, gold, dark brown or a range of other similar colours. Aged rums have a fine golden hue from their extensive time in oak vats. Do you spy a green tint around the edges? This is another clue to extensive ageing.

4. Enjoy the Aroma of the Rum

Lift the glass to your nose-opening and inhale. Now swirl the rum in the glass and inhale again. Classic rum aromas are wood, nuts, honey, spice, vanilla, cocoa and orange.

5. Taste the Rum

Take aim, lock on, take a sip. Swirl the rum around your mouth, let  it linger, then swirl again and swallow. Is it sweet or dry? Light or full-bodied? After you swallow, note the taste - the finish is what many Top Rum Tasters remember most about a rum. A double aged rum like Bundaberg Select Vat might possess an extraordinary blend of flavours: oak, vanilla, fruit, molasses and caramel.

6. Taste the Rum Again

It may take a number of tastes for your brain machine to make a decision. Every person is different, so go forth and share your opinion
